Iranian dissident calls off fast
Speaking after the first visit to her husband in hospital for nearly three weeks, Massoumeh Shafeih said he was in fair health.

Mr Ganji has been in hospital since starting a hunger strike in June in protest at his imprisonment.

The United States, the European Union and human rights groups have called for his release.

Ms Shafeih said her husband had told her that he had agreed to take soup and fruit compote.

She added that this was the only kind of food he could take, and that he was very weak.

Akbar Ganji was jailed five years ago after writing articles linking senior Iranian officials to a string of killings of intellectuals.

His action made him a rallying point for reformists, students and human rights activists in Iran.

Mr Ganji began a hunger strike in June, to demand his unconditional release.
